Free First Thursdays at EMP|SFM offers free admission and music from 5-8 p.m. on the first Thursday of the month during winter hours. Due to capacity issues, Battlestar Galactica: The Exhibition will be closed during these evenings.

December’s Free First Thursday:
Performances by surf rock masters King of Hawaii at 5:30 pm and lounge pop provocateurs Lushy at 6:30 pm in Sky Church.

Lushy concocts a refreshing pop style that blends bossa beats with elements of lounge, surf, new wave, ska and sixties pop to create their own distinctive intercontinental sound…think Jetsons on Vespas with swizzle sticks and distortion pedals. Lounge-y and danceable holiday fun with special guest Lynval Golding of The Specials! Listen to them here.

Formed in 1996, King of Hawaii is an all-instrumental five-piece band that hails from Seattle. With all-original compositions, the band is inspired by a range of music that includes 1960’s surf music, Spanish flamenco guitar and the works of guitarist Johnny Marr. Listen to King of Hawaii here.

ABOUT DUNSHEE HOUSE
Dunshee House is a non-profit organization that envisions individuals in communities connected by the shared values of health and well being, personal development, and compassionate support of one another. They work to build community and cultivate powerful, healthy lives by providing emotional support and personal development services to those affected by HIV/AIDS, the Queer communities, and those who love them.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Lushy concocts a refreshing pop style that blends bossa beats with elements of lounge, surf, new wave, ska and sixties pop to create their own distinctive intercontinental sound…think Jetsons on Vespas with swizzle sticks and distortion pedals. The 10 piece Lushy features horns: trumpet, trombone, and various saxophones plus a bevy of instrumenta rollicka: flute, synth, keys, melodica, guitars and the inevitable bongos, congas, tambourine, maracas, and shakers-martini and otherwise… this is progressive cocktail pop! Lounge-y and danceable fun with special guest Lynval Golding of The Specials!

Purty Mouth is Seattle’s camped-up country-tonk combo: a little Hedwig, a little Hee Haw, a lotta heart. Since 2002, Purty Mouth has been paying honor to the greats of country music, while putting their own special stamp on their blend of country and pop (or as they used to say, ‘countrypolitan’).

Triangle Park Pinata Party on Beacon Hill-Beacon Ave & Stevens Ave

July 17, 2010 1:45pm Triangle Park Pinata Party, Beacon Hill Seattle, WA

Piñata Party returns on July 17

It’s almost time for the annual Piñata Party at Stevens Place Park (informally known as Triangle Park—it’s the small triangular park located between Beacon Avenue South, South Stevens Street, and 17th Avenue South)! Last year’s party was cancelled because of the Link Light Rail opening day festivities, but this year it’s back on July 17 with music, food, and as always, piñatas for the kids to clobber.

Our neighborhood Beacon Hill Piñata Party is Saturday, July 17 from 12 noon – 3:00pm at Triangle Park at South Stevens Streeet and Beacon Avenue South.

On behalf of your neighborhood organizing committee, here are a few notes for past attendees and first timers:

Food
We’re not grilling this year. Instead, food will be potluck style with a few local restaurants and Red Apple contributing. We’ll definitely have free fruit, juice and water. Please bring an item to share or a picnic lunch.

Entertainment, games, piñatas
Local band and Piñata Party tradition Lushy will perform as well as Beacon Avenue’s Jun Hong Kung Fu and a Oaxacan dance for kids. There will be a number of fun games for kids, too. Piñatas will start around 2:15pm. We still need a few more piñatas. Please let me know if you can bring a piñata.
